How Do I Know If I Have Scoliosis?
Scoliosis can develop without much warning, and in some cases, you might not even know you have it! Your spine is made up of stacking vertebrae, and those vertebrae typically take on a vertical shape in a straight line. Scoliosis spines take on an “S” or “C” shape, and can sometimes be visible to the naked eye.
Scoliosis treatment is mostly focused on symptom management, unless you have a severe case. If you are concerned that you have scoliosis, come see us at AFC Urgent Care Gastonia! We can do a work-up and take some X-rays for you.
What Is the Process for a Scoliosis Diagnosis?
One of the most common ways to diagnose a spinal issue is to get some detailed internal images. An X-ray is a great tool to start with, and those X-rays are studied to determine the degree of your curvature. An MRI or a CT scan may also be ordered if the doctor needs a more in-depth look.
With any diagnosis, early detection is important to support a healthier lifestyle and to minimize your symptoms. If you are younger and are still growing, it is especially important to keep an eye on any worsening symptoms.
Symptoms of Scoliosis
- Difference in shoulder height
- Asymmetry in ribs
- Difference in hip or shoulder blade height
- Prominence on one side of the back when bending over
Can Scoliosis Be Treated?
Treatment can range all the way from a “watch and wait” approach to surgery, depending on the severity of your case. Whenever there is significant curving, a brace may be suggested to help slowly realign the spine with constant pressure.
Surgery is the most invasive approach and is only considered if the curve is severe and affecting daily life.
Reducing Scoliosis Symptoms
- Consistent exercise to strengthen your back muscles
- Anti-inflammatories to manage pain
- Yoga and stretching to help alleviate pressure points on your back
