How Long Does the Flu Last?

Ah-choo! Could it be the flu?

Each year, about 10% of the American population gets the flu—and around 100,000 people are hospitalized because of the flu.

Our team at AFC Urgent Care Gastonia wants you to know how you can stay protected from the flu 2019 virus this season.

Is It a Cold or the Flu?

Although cold and flu symptoms can be similar, there are differences between the two medical conditions. For one, the flu usually involves a fever. Extreme fatigue and body aches are also good indicators that you are having symptoms of the flu.

For a cold, your symptoms usually last about a week and are milder than those of the flu.

Signs of the Flu

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Stuffy nose
  • Tiredness
  • Muscle aches
  • Headaches

How Long Does the Flu Last?

If you do end up with the flu, you may experience symptoms for up to a couple weeks. However, the most severe symptoms usually only last for a few days.

Symptoms like fatigue may last longer as your body recovers from the illness. If you have the flu, your doctor may prescribe an antiviral medication that can lessen the intensity of the illness.

Treatment of the Flu

  • Take an antiviral medication as prescribed.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Drink lots of fluids, particularly water.
  • Treat aches, cough and pains with OTC medications.
  • Use a humidifier.
